Our Verdict

Beyond Compare is a single file liken and directory sync utility wrapped in one.

Beyond Compare Modular variation ($30) is a ruling utility for tracking down differences between files and folders. Its feature ready is comparable to free and ingenuous-source WinMerge, with a couple of added extras such as comparison images and music single file metadata, and digest for comparing files over FTP.

Beyond Liken supports syntax highlighting and can be used to equivalence HTML documents.

Beyond Liken's interface is aboveboard and easy to understand. It uses tabs, so you bathroom have several compare sessions at the same time. Each session compares two folders or two files of the same type. Each file or folder compared gets a pane, and you can browse the deuce panes to visit the differences.

The first thing I tried to do with Beyond Compare was compare two versions of a scholarly text. Information technology tracked down the differences, but the interface ready-made it difficult for me to see them: Beyond Compare does not support word wrapper. This means each lengthy paragraph in my clause got just a single line, and I had to keep scrolling horizontally to see the rest of the line. Non very convenient.

On the far side Compare's MP3 comparison feature sole goes into metadata, not actualised sound.

I got better results comparing HTML. My file did not have overly long lines–and I use a widescreen monitor–and then the manual line breaks in the file out itself were enough to pull round decipherable in On the far side Compare. I could easily assure the differences between two versions of the same HTML file, and merge them any way I wanted to.

Beyond Compare also has a have for determination differences 'tween image files. I proved IT with two PCWorld logo files I base online. It was no surprise that Beyond Compare habitual that the files were absolutely identical. Then I ready-made them different with a simple pluck, just shifting one file on its canvas. Beyond Liken visually highlighted the differences, showing where pixels didn't agree in the two files.

Beyond Compare's image comparison feature works visually, lease you see which pixels are different.

Unequal the image comparison feature, MP3 comparison did not enter upon the actual sound data stored in the files. Beyond Equivalence simply arranged out the metadata (ID3 tag end) for each of the files, and showed me the differences. This is marginally useful, but if you are overserious about your MP3 metadata you are punter disconnected using the free (and fantabulous) MusicBrainz Picard.

Beyond Compare was riotous and responsive when I tested information technology, and the features worked as described. That said, unless you need some of its more exotic features such as FTP support, you may get similar results using one of the free alternatives.
